More Nutritional Myth Debunking for the New Year - Dr Briffa's e-newsletter - 31st December 2010

Dear Kelley

More nutritional myth debunking for the New Year

My last blog on Christmas eve presented a rag-bag of nutritional truths that I wish were more widely known, on the basis that this would allow individuals to make more informed choices about what they eat and take more control of their health. This week, without any conscious intent, I have found myself coming across recent research or stories that highlight more dietary misinformation.

On Wednesday, my blog looked at recent research which found no link between fibre intake and colon cancer. No surprises here, as this is in keeping with previous research which suggests no protective role for fibre in this regard. However, more surprisingly, this research found that a tendency to sluggish bowel function was associated with a reduced risk of colon cancer. For more on this, see Think bran is good for the bowels? Think again.

Yesterday, my blog looked at some research which reveals that much of the research on the 'benefits' of moderate drinking (of alcohol) is biased and unreliable. To find out why, and for some advice on how to mitigate the potentially unhealthy effects of drinking, see Is moderate drinking really good for the heart?

And finally, in today's blog I stick up for meat. This food, particularly the red variety, does not enjoy the healthiest of reputations. However, much of the negative opinion of this food is based on faulty logic and is not science-based. Plus, as I explain, meat really is a nutritional heavyweight. For more on this, see Meat - the original superfood.

Some of you may be contemplating a nutritional overhaul in the New Year. If so, and particularly if you're male, you may be interesting in reading my latest book - Waist Disposal - published earlier this year.

In the book, you'll discover:
  • the foods that, irrespective of calories, cause fatness, and the foods that don't
  • why weight loss in not the goal, but fat loss is
  • why counting calories does not work, and what does
  • how hunger scuppers fat loss, and which food sate the appetite the best
  • how to get fit and toned with just 12 minutes of exercise a day
  • how to harness the power of your mind to accelerate your fat loss and muscle-building progress
The book has garnered 60 four- and five-star reviews on amazon. To read the reviews (and buy the book), click here.

Thank you to all of you who have already bought the book! My sincere hope is that it's been useful, informative and inspirational to you.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to wish all of my readers a very happy and healthy New Year. I look forward to sharing good science, my clinical experience and some common sense with you over the coming year.
