UK's Leading Diabetes Charity Needs to Get Its Own House in Order - Dr Briffa's e-newsletter - 24th February 2012

Dear Kelley

The UK's leading diabetes charity needs to get its own house in order

Baroness Barbara Young is the chief executive of Diabetes UK -Britain's largest diabetes charity. Baroness Young engaged in a bit of media blitz this week, raising awareness regarding what she believes is substandard care for diabetics. However, as I explain in one of my blog posts this week, Diabetes UK would do well to get its own house in order regarding the dietary advice it gives to diabetics. More evidence suggests that lack of sleep might drive over-eating

Last month, I relayed the results of a study which found that a night without sleep appeared to provoke changes in the brain that would likely drive an increased intake of food. This weeks sees the publication of a similar study which showed essentially the same thing. For more on this, click this link.

We doctors aren't very evidence-based (we just think we are)

Quite a lot of doctors like to talk about how conventional medicine is 'evidence-based'. The fact is though, much of clinical practice is anything but. Also, some of us can struggle with evidence because of judgements that come from a place of bias, rather than good science. I was reminded of this when I attended meeting for health journalists this week. For more on this, click this link.
