Diabetes Charity Spouts More Nutritional Nonsense - Dr Briffa's e-newsletter - 9th March 2012

Dear Kelley

Diabetes charity spouts more nutritional nonsense

Diabetes UK is the UK's largest diabetes charity, and it advises diabetics to include starchy carbohydrate with every meal. This approach, as I recently highlighted in a blog post, is not scientific, does not make sense, and does not work in practice. The BBC here in the UK picked up on this and invited me onto the BBC 4 radio show 'You and Yours' to debate the issue with a representative from Diabetes UK. Kellogg's found guilty of misleading the public over sugar

Breakfast cereal manufacturer Kellogg's has recently been found guilty of misleading the public over the health effects of sugar. However, as I explain in one of my blog posts this week, this is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of the politics surrounding sugar. In the blog post I relate details regarding the sugar industry's history of perverting scientists and science for its own ends. For more on this, click this link.

Coffee again linked with reduced risk of diabetes

Coffee does not enjoy the healthiest of reputations, but actually has been associated in the scientific literature with benefits for health, particularly a reduced risk of diabetes. In my blog post today I write about another recent study which found this link, as well as an editorial that which offers potential explanations for this association. For more on this, click this link.

To your good health!
