Can Berries Be Good For Your Brain? - Dr Briffa's e-newsletter - 6th April 2012

Dear Kelley

Can berries be good for your brain?

Most of us would like to avoid dementia as we age, and there appears to be several nutritional strategies that have merit here. In one of my blog posts today I highlight some evidence which suggests berries and other intensely coloured fruits might help promote healthy brain function and ward against dementia. Claims for new flu vaccine are based more on rhetoric than good research

I came across a report recently which concerned the supposed advantages of a flu vaccine containing four strains of flu virus (quadrivalent vaccine) rather than the usual three (trivalent vaccine). However, as I write in one of my blog posts, the study which sparked this report tells us nothing at all about the effectiveness of the quadrivalent vaccine. Like a lot of vaccine research, this study leaves us with at least as many questions as answers. For more on this, click this link.

Can low cholesterol cause cancer?

A recent study presented at a scientific meeting has found a relationship between low levels of LDL-cholesterol and increased risk of cancer. In one of my blogs this week, I summarise some evidence which suggests that low cholesterol might be a genuine risk factor for cancer. For more on this, click this link.

To your good health!
