The Natural Remedy for an 'Irritable Bladder' - Dr Briffa's e-newsletter - 27th April 2012

Dear Kelley

The natural remedy that often relieves the symptoms of an 'irritable bladder'

Irritable bladder syndrome is characterised by symptoms such as frequent urination, the need to pass water at night, and frequent urges to pass water and sometimes the need to go quickly. A recent article in the British Medical Journal discussed the management of this condition, but neglected to include the thing I've found to be the single most effective remedy for irritable bladder symptoms in practice. More aggressive treatment of low thyroid function may reduce the risk of heart disease

Low thyroid function is usually diagnosed on the basis of blood tests, but even when these are abnormal, some doctors are reluctant to treat this condition. A recent research papers finds that more aggressive treatment of thyroid issues is linked with a significantly reduced risk of heart attacks in younger women. For more on this, click this link.

Declaration of conflicts of interest may make bias worse, not better

The categorisation of health issues and their treatment is often dictated by panels of doctors, many of whom have financial conflicts of interest here. Declarations of these interests is more common now, and is generally viewed as a good thing. However, in a recent piece from the editors of the journal PLoS Medicine, it is argued that declaration of conflicts of interest may make bias in the setting of medical guidelines worse, not better. To your good health!
