Wheat: Opiate of the Masses? - Dr Briffa's e-newsletter - 18th May 2012

Dear Kelley

Wheat: opiate of the masses?

Last week I spoke at the 'low-carb cruise' event organised by low-carb advocate Jimmy Moore. I had the pleasure of meeting and talking with many people, including some of the other speakers at the event. One of these was Dr William (Bill) Davis, cardiologist and author of Wheat Belly. In one of my blogs this week, I focus on one important aspect of Bill's talk - wheat's potential to act as an opiate and to be addictive and heighten hunger. For more on this, click this link.

Statins for all? Hang on a minute...

This week saw the publication of a 'meta-analysis' in The Lancet which have led its authors to conclude we should be considering giving statins to pratically everyone, irrespective of their risk of heart attack and stroke. One of my blogs this week takes a look at the findings of this meta-analsysis to reveal what we've known all along: statins simply don't benefit the vast majority of people who take them. Mouse study provides support for the concept of intermittent fasting

'Intermiitent fasting' basically means going for extended periods without food. This is traditionally advised against, but I have to admit I'm a recent convert to the concept (though it's not for everyone). This week, one of my blog posts covers a recent study in mice which appears to provide good supporting evidence for the supposed benefits of intermittent fasting. For more on this, click this link.

To your good health!
