How Emotional Is 'Emotional' Eating, Really? - Dr Briffa's e-newsletter - 6th May 2011

Dear Kelley

How emotional is 'emotional' eating really?

Many individuals have themselves down as 'emotional' eaters - eating in response to, say, 'stress' or anxiety. In one of my blogs this week I talk about how, in my clinical experience, emotional eating is often caused by issues that are not so much psychological in nature, but physiological. Adequate sleep important for insulin functioning and blood sugar control

This week saw the publication that found that poor sleep is associated with 'insulin resistance' (poorly functioning insulin) in diabetics. Insulin resistance is generally bad news, in that it almost certainly predisposes individuals to weight gain, as well as increased fatigue and hunger. In yesterday's post, I write about this research, as well as other evidence which shows that just one night of curtailed sleep has the capacity to induce insulin resistance. 'Solar power' for human beings

Recently, I had to dig out some research on vitamin D - in particular, the evidence which suggests this hormone (it's not really a vitamin) with improved fitness and athletic performance. Seeing as we're having a sunny spell in the UK right now, it seemed like a good time to summarise some of the most relevant pieces of research in one of my blog posts this week.
