Primal Diet Trumps 'Diabetes Diet' in Diabetics - Dr Briffa's e-newsletter - 13th May 2011

Dear Kelley

Primal diet much better for diabetics than standard 'diabetes diet'

Diabetes is fundamentally a problem in which individuals have difficulty handling carbohydrate, yet many diabetics are advised to eat a diet based on carbohydrate. Common sense dictates that a diet lower in carbohydrate is going to be a better way. In a study published last year, diabetics ate a low-carb 'primal' diet for 3 months. Compared to when eating a standard 'diabetes diet', they saw significant improvements in weight, waist circumference and markers of disease. For more on this, click this link.

Thyroid disease may be at the root of problems with miscarriage and pre-term birth

Miscarriage and pre-term (early) birth are common problems. In a recent study, these problems were found to be associated with raised levels of substances called 'thyroid autoantibodies'.These antibodies signal thyroid disease, even in the presence of 'normal' levels of thyroid hormones. Most importantly, it seems treating such individuals with thyroid hormone (thyroxine) roughly halves the risk of miscarriage and pre-term birth. For more on this, click this link.

Sunlight, vitamin D and Crohn's disease

Crohn's disease is an 'inflammatory bowel disease'. The condition may have many potential causes, but a recent study links it with reduced exposure to sunlight. In a blog post this week, I review some of the evidence linking Crohn's disease with vitamin D in both animals and humans. There does seem to be good evidence to suggest that optimising sun exposure and vitamin D may help keep Crohn's disease at bay. For more on this, click this link.
