If You Lose Weight, You Better Make Sure... - Dr Briffa's e-newsletter - 13th January 2012

Dear Kelley

If you lose weight, you'd better make sure your leptin is functioning properly

Leptin is a hormone secreted by fat cells that stimulates the metabolism and suppresses appetite - nice! Problem is, when people lose weight, their leptin levels fall and this can make weight loss maintenance difficult. A study published this week highlights the importance of good leptin functioning in people who have lost weight. For more on this, and one key dietary strategy for keeping leptin doing its job, click this link.

I have nothing against vegetarians, but...

I get occasional emails from vegetarians, some which enquire how to apply the dietary principles i espouse in the context of a vegetarian diet. In my blog post today, I explore the dilemma I feel I have on my hands when posed with this question. For more on this, click this link.

Statin treatment associated with increased risk of diabetes

A study recently out links statin use with an enhanced risk of diabetes in post-menopausal women. In one of my blogs this week, I briefly discuss this study, and post a related video which includes some thoughts from what appears to be a very enlightened doctor. For more on this, click this link.

To your good health!
