Why does the UK obesity advisor dish out useless advice?
On Tuesday, I was asked to contribute to a discussed on obesity on BBC Radio 4's show
Woman's Hour. One of the other guests was Dr Susan Jebb - chief government advisor on obesity. Dr Jebb trotted out the usual rhetoric about weight loss being hard and the need to 'stick with it', never once pausing to consider why conventional approaches don't (or can't) work. In my blog post today I write about this, and consider why it might be that Dr Jebb and the British Government seem incapable of offering science-based and effective strategies for weight control. Supplementing with vitamin D can assist fat loss and improve disease markers
We have a lot of studies linking higher levels of vitamin D with improved health, but these studies are not as powerful as those in which individuals are actually treated with vitamin D to see what effect this has. Recently, a study was published in which women were treated with vitamin D for 12 weeks. The results of this study suggest vitamin D can help fat loss and improve markers for heart disease.
