Shocking Swedish 'Science' - Dr Briffa's e-newsletter - 15th June 2012

Dear Kelley

Shocking Swedish science

A Swedish study got a lot of media coverage this week. It purports to show that a trend for eating a low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet in Sweden is raising blood cholesterol levels and putting the poor Swedes in perilous danger. In one of my blogs this week I discuss why this study and the way it's been reported represent some of the poorest 'science' I have ever seen. For more on this, click this link.

Exercise boosts the metabolism? It seems the reverse might be true

Aerobic exercises such as running and cycling are often recommend for weight loss, but the evidence suggests they, overall, don't much help here really. In one of my blogs this week, I write about why time spent exercising does not normally translate into weight loss, including research which suggests it can actually have a suppressant effect on the metabolism. Statins can drain the life out of us

Statins suppress an enzyme in the liver which makes cholesterol, but also makes a substance called Coenzyme Q10 that is integral to energy production in the body. Some recent research has shown that statins can really drain the life out of people, especially women. For more on this and some ideas on what to do about it, click this link.

To your good health!
